EU accession negotiations: the reaction of the President of Ukraine (video)

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reacted to the start of negotiations on our country’s accession to the European Union. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" reports citing a video posted on the Ukrainian leader’s official Telegram channel on Tuesday, 25 June.
“Today the negotiations start. There are thousands of meetings and calls between these steps. The conditions that Ukraine has fully fulfilled. Laws that have been adopted and are now in force. And the most important thing is the determination of our people, our nation,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
The Head of State stressed that this meant that Ukraine would definitely become a full member of the European Union. Now the issue is technical work, adaptation of our system to the EU and the political will of Europe to make the European project truly complete.
According to him, Ukraine has managed to overcome many obstacles and dispel many doubts about its right to become part of the European family since signing its application for accession to the European Union on 28 February 2022.
“This is only possible with Ukraine as part of a united Europe – a Europe of values, a Europe without splits, ideological walls and grey areas, a Europe of peace – real peace. I thank everyone who supports Ukraine on this path, who helps and who fights for Ukraine,” the President said.
According to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, Ukraine has the following stages to go on its way to EU membership.
In progress:
- expected from July 2024 – bilateral meetings where Ukraine presents to the EU the state of compliance of national legislation with EU law in each negotiated chapter;
- by October 2024 – Ukraine implements the recommendations of the European Commission as part of the Enlargement Package;
- expected in early 2025 – the European Commission presents a report on the compliance of Ukrainian legislation with EU law for each negotiated chapter.
Future steps:
- Ukraine and the EU negotiate Ukraine’s accession to the EU until all negotiating clusters are closed;
- The European Commission presents its opinion on Ukraine’s readiness to join the EU;
- the EU Member States and the European Parliament unanimously decide to sign the Accession Agreement with Ukraine;
- The European Parliament and the national parliaments of all EU member states and Ukraine ratify the Accession Agreement.
