They went to look at a drone and were killed: details of the tragedy in Cherkasy Oblast

1 April 22:11

A tragedy occurred in the Cherkasy region, once again demonstrating just how dangerous even downed Russian drones remain. On April 1, in the Zolotonosha district, four local residents were killed after the warhead of a drone they had approached too closely detonated. This was reported by the Cherkasy Regional Prosecutor’s Office, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

According to the prosecutor’s office, around 1:00 p.m. during an air raid alert, a drone crashed in an open area between settlements in the Zolotonosha district.

This was followed by the detonation of its warhead.

Four people were killed in the explosion; law enforcement officials note that they had approached the crash site out of curiosity.

What exactly happened in the Cherkasy region

The information about the deaths was also confirmed by Ihor Taburets, head of the Cherkasy Regional State Administration. He reported that the tragedy occurred in an open area during an air raid alert, and law enforcement officials are currently investigating all the circumstances of the incident.

The Cherkasy Regional Prosecutor’s Office clarified that the incident involved the explosion of the warhead of an enemy drone after it crashed. This means that even a downed or already landed UAV is not safe and can detonate at any moment.

Why drone debris is deadly

Following the tragedy, law enforcement and rescue workers once again reminded the public that any debris from UAVs, missiles, or other explosive devices can pose a deadly threat. Even if an object is lying motionless, this does not mean it is no longer active. It may still contain an explosive component capable of detonating from the slightest impact or with a time delay.

That is precisely why the “let’s go take a closer look” approach is extremely dangerous. The tragedy in Cherkasy Oblast has effectively demonstrated that mere curiosity near the crash site of an enemy drone can cost lives.

What proceedings have been initiated

A pre-trial investigation has been launched into the deaths under Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—war crimes. This article applies to crimes related to violations of the laws and customs of war.

What the authorities advise following this incident

Following the tragedy, Ihor Taburets urged residents of the region to always heed danger warnings and not approach downed aerial targets. He emphasized that debris must be reported immediately by calling 101 or 102.

This is now the main safety rule: do not touch, do not approach, do not attempt to photograph from close range, and do not move debris on your own. Only specialists should perform such actions. This aligns with the recommendations issued by law enforcement following the tragedy.

Why this story matters for all of Ukraine

The Cherkasy incident is not just tragic news from one region. It is a warning for all regions of Ukraine where enemy drones and missiles can reach. The crash of a UAV does not mean the danger has passed. On the contrary, it is precisely after a crash that the risk of detonation often remains, which may not be obvious to civilians.
