After massive layoffs at the newspaper: The Washington Post’s CEO resigns

8 February 08:06

William Lewis, CEO of The Washington Post (WP), has resigned amid massive layoffs.

This was reported by Axios and Politico, citing a letter from Lewis to the newspaper’s employees, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

Lewis took over as CEO of WP in 2023. In his address to employees, he noted that he was forced to make “difficult decisions” in order to ensure a “sustainable future” for the newspaper.

Jeff D’Onofrio has been appointed interim CEO. He has served as CFO of The Washington Post since 2025.

On February 4, WP management informed employees of the start of large-scale layoffs due to financial problems. According to editor-in-chief Matt Murray, it was decided to close the sports department in its current form.

According to Reuters, the personnel changes were to affect all departments. However, the main division remained the department that produces news about politics and public administration.
