Parubiy’s funeral: people’s deputy says goodbye in Lviv – live broadcast

on September 2, the funeral service for Andriy Parubiy, a member of the European Solidarity party, former speaker of the Verkhovna Rada and public figure, began in Lviv. The politician was killed on August 30 on Yefremova Street with a firearm. He will be buried at Lychakiv Cemetery. This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the broadcast of the funeral, which is conducted by the Suspilne-Lviv TV channel.
Farewell ceremony in Lviv
At noon, a funeral liturgy was held at St. George’s Cathedral. An hour before the service, people began to gather on the church grounds to pay their respects to the politician. Among the attendees were relatives, colleagues, fellow party members, friends, Lviv residents, and political figures.









The funeral service was attended by:
- chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk,
- petro Poroshenko, the fifth president of Ukraine, leader of the European Solidarity party, and his wife Maryna,
- Yulia Tymoshenko, leader of the Batkivshchyna party,
- former Prime Ministers Arseniy Yatsenyuk and Volodymyr Groysman,
- former Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Oleksandr Turchynov,
- Yuriy Lutsenko,
- members of the European Solidarity party, including Mykola Kniazhytskyi and Volodymyr Ariev,
- representatives of the Maidan Self-Defense.
Citywide ceremony
A citywide farewell ceremony is scheduled for 13:30 on Rynok Square near the City Hall.
After that, the funeral procession will go to Lychakiv Cemetery, where Andriy Parubiy will be buried.
Honoring the memory
The farewell to the politician began the day before: a memorial service was held in Kyiv on Independence Square, and a parastas was held in Lviv at St. George’s Cathedral.
The murder of Andriy Parubiy
on August 30, former Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andriy Parubiy was killed in Lviv. Law enforcement is establishing all the circumstances of the crime.
Around noon, the police received a report of a shooting. At first, the police reported that the incident occurred in the Sykhiv district, but later clarified that the murder took place in the Frankivsk district of the city. The victim died on the spot as a result of gunshot wounds.
On the day of the tragedy, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed Parubiy’s death:
“Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko and Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko have just reported on the first known circumstances of the horrific murder in Lviv. Andriy Parubiy has died. My condolences to his family and friends. All necessary forces and means are involved in the investigation and search for the killer.”
According to Suspilne’s sources, seven shell casings were found at the crime scene. The shooter was dressed in a delivery service courier’s uniform and was riding an electric bicycle. He approached Parubiy, fired several shots and fled.
The Prosecutor General’s Office announced the launch of the special operation “Siren”. Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi explained that it is a special action plan to find and detain armed criminals who pose a particular danger.
In his address, President Zelensky emphasized that Parubiy’s murder was carefully prepared.
The suspect in the murder of Andriy Parubiy was detained on the night of September 1. Necessary investigative actions are underway.
Tetyana Chornovol may become an MP instead of Parubiy if she does not give up her mandate, as she is currently a military servicewoman.
Andriy Parubiy: political career
Andriy Parubiy (born in 1971) is a Ukrainian politician, public figure, former Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (2016-2019), long-time MP (6th, 7th, 8th and 9th convocations), former Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council.
He was born in Lviv region. He graduated from Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and Lviv Polytechnic.
He began his career in the Lviv Regional Council, where he was a deputy and later a deputy chairman. In 2007, he was elected to the Verkhovna Rada as a member of the Our Ukraine – People’s Self-Defense bloc.
In 2013-2014, during the Revolution of Dignity, he was the commandant of the Maidan and head of the Self-Defense.
In 2016, Parubiy became the head of the Verkhovna Rada, replacing Volodymyr Groysman, who became Prime Minister. He served as Speaker of the Parliament until August 2019.
In the same year, he was elected to the 9th convocation of the Parliament from the European Solidarity party, taking second place on the list.
