The Ukrainian national football team will play a friendly match with the Polish national team today. [ Komersant reports on the details of the match.

Poland

Poland is ranked 28th in the FIFA world rankings (Ukraine is 22nd). The history of the national team began on 18 December 1921 with a match against Hungary, which ended in a 0-1 defeat. The team’s biggest victory was recorded on 1 April 2009 against San Marino with a score of 10:0, and the worst defeat was suffered by the Poles on 26 June 1948 against Denmark (0:8). The team is often called the “White and Red” or “White Eagles”.

Throughout its history, the Polish national team has twice won bronze medals at the World Championships (1974 and 1982), reached the quarter-finals at Euro 2016 and won gold at the 1972 Olympic Games.

Since September 2023, the team has been coached by 51-year-old Polish specialist Michał Probej, who replaced Portuguese Fernando Santos. Prior to working with the national team, Probiez coached a number of Polish clubs, Greek Aris and the Polish youth team. Under his leadership, the national team played six games, winning three and drawing three times. Probiez prefers the 3-4-2-1 tactical scheme.

The key player of the national team is the 35-year-old Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski. He played 148 matches for the national team and scored 82 goals. In his career, Lewandowski has won numerous trophies with Lech, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona, including victories in the Polish, German and Spanish leagues, as well as the UEFA Champions League.

History of the confrontation

Today’s meeting will be the 10th in the history of these teams’ rivalry. In the previous nine matches, the Polish national team won four, the Ukrainian national team won three, and two more matches ended in a draw. The total score of goals scored is 11:9 in favour of the Polish team.

Among the current players of the Ukrainian national team, only Andriy Yarmolenko has experience of scoring goals against the Poles – he scored twice. In addition to him, Andriy Shevchenko (three times), Serhiy Kravchenko, Yevhen Selezniov, Oleh Husiev and Roman Zozulia (all once) scored against the Poles.

When you go to the national team, these people ask for one thing – that you win and give a little positive emotion to all the people in the country. So there should be no problems with motivation,”

Who will win?

Bookmakers consider the Polish national team to be a slight favourite – the odds on the Polish team to win are 2.69, which is slightly lower than on the Ukrainian team to win – 2.79. The odds on a draw are 3.35.

Euro 2024

The match with Poland is the penultimate for the Ukrainian national team before the European Championship. The last pre-tournament game will be a match against Moldova in Chisinau on 11 June. The next day, the Ukrainian national team will travel to Germany for the Euros.
