Poland promises temperatures down to –30°C: will Ukraine be hit by Arctic cold from Scandinavia?

28 January 16:13

Poland is experiencing a severe cold snap and frost, which has already affected daily life and weather conditions in the country. Major weather centers are forecasting a significant drop in temperature and prolonged snowfall in many regions, creating difficult weather conditions for residents and transport. "Komersant Ukrainian" investigated whether the Arctic air will affect Ukraine, when to expect the lowest temperatures, and which regions will be affected by the most severe frosts.

The day before, meteorologists recorded very low temperatures at night in several provinces and warned of the danger of black ice and heavy precipitation.

Poland is facing the strongest frosts in many years

A sharp cold snap is approaching the country. After a brief thaw, a wave of Arctic air will arrive. According to IMGW forecasts, these could be the most severe frosts in recent times.

Today and tomorrow, the temperature will remain around zero, and in the south (from Podkarpacie to Silesia) it will even reach 4…6°C.

On Thursday, it will start to get colder, and on Friday, the situation will change dramatically. The harshest weather is expected in early February.

On Monday night (February 2), temperatures may drop to -30°C in some places.

The frosts will last at least until February 5.

On Sunday, temperatures in Mazovia are forecast to reach -24°C.

Will the cold weather come to Ukraine?

Forecaster Natalia Golenia in an exclusive comment "Komersant Ukrainian" that the information about a “cyclone in Poland” is incorrect. In fact, the weather situation is being shaped by an anticyclone that is moving from Scandinavia along with cold Arctic air.

“I don’t know where they got the cyclone in Poland. The cyclone from Scandinavia is coming our way. We will feel it…,” says Natalia Golenia.

It is this anticyclone that will cause a gradual but noticeable drop in temperature in Ukraine.

When will the cold snap begin?

Ukrainians will feel the first signs of a sharp cold snap at the end of January.

“The temperature will start to drop on January 30-31. The anticyclone from Scandinavia in the cold Arctic air will shift to Ukraine. Therefore, the cold, that is, the frost, will intensify,” explains the forecaster.

The most intense wave of frost is forecast for early February.

The coldest period: February 1-4

According to current calculations, the peak of the cold spell will occur in the first days of February.

“From February 1 to 4, the lowest temperatures will be in the western, northern, central, and eastern regions, in particular the Kharkiv region,” says Golenya.

The strongest frosts are expected at night, especially when the sky is clear.

Down to –28°C at night: where will it be coldest?

According to the forecaster, on some nights the temperature may drop to critical levels.

“During clear skies, the lowest temperatures will be from -20 to -26, possibly -28 degrees Celsius. Tomorrow we will consider: if we are given 30 degrees — diagrams and calculations, then we will provide information,” she notes.

This primarily concerns nighttime temperatures, which are traditionally lower than daytime temperatures.

What will the daytime temperature be?

Despite the severe night frosts, the daytime temperature will be slightly higher, but still significantly below the climatic norm.

“The daytime temperature will be, let’s say, from 12 to 17 degrees below zero. In the north, it could be as low as 18-19 degrees below zero,” the forecaster explained.

Should we prepare for extreme frosts?

Ukraine is indeed expecting a wave of severe cold weather, but it is not related to the cyclone in Poland, but to an anticyclone from Scandinavia, which is bringing Arctic air. The coldest period will be from February 1 to 4, especially at night, when temperatures in some regions may drop to –26…–28°C, and according to updated forecasts, even lower.

Forecasters continue to refine their calculations, so the final temperature records may still be adjusted.
