on July 27, 2025, Ukrainian scientist, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Yuriy Yampolsky died at the age of 79. This was reported by the National Antarctic Research Center, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
Yuriy Yampolsky was one of the leading experts in the fields of space physics and near-Earth physics, and also played a key role in the formation of the Ukrainian Antarctic program. He organized and headed the geospace research at the Akademik Vernadsky Antarctic Station.
According to Gennadiy Milinevsky, the head of the first Ukrainian Antarctic expedition, Yampolsky was a generator of innovative ideas, able to formulate complex scientific problems and ways to solve them simply and clearly. His contribution to the development of Ukrainian science is invaluable.
“Yura’s arrival in Antarctica was unusual. He went from skepticism and doubts to complete enthusiasm, which became his life’s work,” Milinevsky recalls.
Yampolsky was not only an outstanding scientist, but also a man with a deep mind, a subtle sense of humor, and a rare ability to support others in difficult moments.
The scientific directions he laid down continue to be the leading ones in the NASC research: the study of the atmosphere, ionosphere, climate change and the interrelationships between them is carried out at a level that meets or exceeds world standards.
