Portugal will contribute 50 million euros to the PURL mechanism, which ensures the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine.
According to "Komersant Ukrainian", Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal announced this on the social network X.
Shmyhal met with Portuguese Defense Minister Nuno Melo.
“I thanked him for visiting Kyiv at this important time. I expressed my sincere gratitude to Portugal for the assistance announced during the UDCG meeting and the readiness to make a contribution of 50 million euros to the PURL mechanism,” the Defense Minister said.
In addition, according to Shmyhal, Portugal will allocate EUR 25 million annually for five years under the SAFE initiative for the purchase of Ukrainian defense products.
The ministers also discussed the critical defense needs of Ukraine to protect people and critical infrastructure.
PURL program
In July, the United States and NATO launched the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) program, which provides for the supply of American weapons to Ukraine at the expense of European countries. Kyiv can receive air defense systems, missiles, and ammunition.
Denmark (about 580 million Danish kroner), Sweden ($275 million), Norway ($135 million), the Netherlands (500 million euros), and Germany have already allocated funds for the program.
In September, the first deliveries of military equipment under PURL arrived in Ukraine, with more expected in the near future.
According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga, 21 countries have recently joined the PURL program, under which NATO countries purchase American weapons for Ukraine.
It is also known that Ukraine will receive weapons from US warehouses worth about $5 billion under the PURL program. This will happen by the end of 2025.
