Sowing season 2025 in Ukraine: farmers sowed more than 550 thousand hectares – who is in the lead
31 March 10:24
The 2025 sowing campaign in Ukraine is gaining momentum, and as of March 28, farmers have already sown 551.8 thou hectares of spring grains and pulses. This was announced by the Minister of Agrarian Policy Vitalii Koval, who emphasized the resilience of Ukrainian farmers in ensuring food security of the country and the world.
We will tell you in detail which crops are leading, which regions are ahead of others and what is planned for this year.
What crops have you sown the most?
Sowing of spring crops is in full swing in Ukraine. According to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, the largest areas are occupied by:
- Barley – 315.5 thou hectares, which makes it the leader among spring grains.
- Peas – 102.9 thou hectares, popular due to its unpretentiousness and demand.
- Spring wheat – 79.8 thou hectares, the area under which is growing this year.
- Oats – 50.7 thou hectares, a stable crop for the domestic market.
In addition, we have started sowing industrial crops: sugar beet has already covered 17.8 thou hectares and soybeans – 0.6 thou hectares. These crops will gradually increase their areas during the season.
The leading regions of the sowing season
Some regions of Ukraine demonstrate impressive sowing rates. Among the leaders are:
- Mykolaiv region – 60.1 thou hectares, traditionally a strong agricultural region.
- Ternopil region – 58.1 thou hectares, where barley and wheat are actively sown.
- Vinnytsia region – 53 thou hectares, a key player in grain production.
- Kirovograd region – 48.8 thou hectares, with a focus on barley and peas.
- Volyn – 47 thou hectares, which keeps up with the leaders.
These regions set the tone for the 2025 planting season, setting an example for other regions.
Plans for 2025: more wheat and stability
According to Vitaliy Koval, in 2025, the company plans to plant 5.7 million hectares of spring grains and pulses, which is the same as in 2024. However, there is an important feature: the area under spring wheat will increase by 28% to 222.8 thou hectares.
This decision is driven by stable demand from processing companies and exporters, for whom wheat remains a strategic crop. In general, farmers seek to maintain a balance between domestic needs and export potential.
Why is it important?
The 2025 planting season is not only about the harvest, but also about the food security of Ukraine and the world. Despite the war, Ukrainian farmers continue to work at full capacity, putting bread on the table and supporting the economy. As Koval noted, “the sowing season is on,” and every hectare is a contribution to the country’s stability.
