On the night of July 30, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 occurred off the coast of Kamchatka. This is one of the strongest earthquakes in the world in the history of observations – only the 2011 earthquake in Japan was stronger.
This was reported by CNN and ABC, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
As a result of the earthquake, tsunami warnings have been issued in several countries in the Pacific region. Evacuations are underway on the coast of Japan and in Hawaii.
The Russian regions of Kamchatka and Sakhalin suffered the greatest destruction.
Two more strong aftershocks with magnitudes of 6.3 and 6.9, as well as dozens of less powerful ones, were recorded there.
Officials report waves up to 3-4 meters high and flooding of coastal areas. Buildings were damaged in several settlements.
