President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has approved the appointment of Yuriy Cherevashenko as commander of Ukraine’s unmanned air defense systems. The head of state announced this on his Facebook page, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
“Today I have approved the appointment of the commander of unmanned air defense systems. The corresponding order has already been signed by Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal,” Zelenskyy said.
Who is Yuriy Cherevashenko?
Yuriy Cherevashenko is an officer of the Armed Forces of Ukraine who previously participated in the creation of the first group of mobile air defense rapid response brigades.
He also worked on the development of interceptor drones, drones capable of engaging enemy aircraft.
There is not much information about him in open sources. It is only known that in early 2010, Cherevashenko was the chief of staff of a separate radio engineering battalion of the Rivne garrison.
This unit was part of the 13th Army Corps, on the basis of which the operational command “North” appeared in 2013.
Before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, in the summer of 2021, Cherevashenko already had the rank of colonel and worked as deputy head of the Air Defense Department of the Land Forces Training Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Tasks of the new commander
In his new position, Cherevashenko will have to scale up the development of the unmanned component of the air defense system and introduce modern technologies to protect the Ukrainian sky.
“At the Staff, we approved many tasks for the new commander. It is important to actively introduce drones, namely interceptor drones, and to strengthen our air defense system with the latest weapons,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized.
