Sale of Russian books under sanctions: what was found during the inspection

25 February 17:49

Ukraine has restricted access to the online store Knizhny Mir, which, according to the authorities, sold publications from the aggressor state, including books from Russian publishers subject to sanctions.

This was reported by the State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine, which conducted an inspection jointly with the Security Service of Ukraine, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

What was found during the inspection

According to the agency, the store offered literature from Russian publishers, including:

  • Exmo
  • AST
  • Piter
  • Knizhny Mir

These publishers are under sanctions or are associated with sanctioned individuals.

In addition, the assortment reportedly included books promoting the ideas of the “Russian world,” advancing imperial narratives, and shaping a positive image of Russia as a “global innovator.”

Violations in the field of e-commerce

During the inspection, violations of e-commerce legislation were also identified: the owners of the resource did not disclose information about their legal status, which is a mandatory requirement of Ukrainian law.

The State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting emphasizes that the lack of open data about the owners makes it impossible to properly control the resource’s activities and creates risks of sanctions being circumvented.

What does access restriction mean?

Access to the site has been restricted. It can only be restored after the end of martial law, provided that the owners of the resource are legalized and its activities are brought into line with Ukrainian law.
