August weather forecast: preparing for heat and lack of rain
1 August 2024 21:00
In August, hot weather and lack of rain are expected in most of Ukraine. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the the forecast by meteorologist Igor Kibalchich.
According to him, at this time, the length of daylight hours is noticeably reduced, which affects the average air temperature, which is falling. However, there are exceptions, when August becomes the hottest month with high temperatures, as it was in 2010. Precipitation in this month is low due to anticyclonic weather and low humidity. There may be frosts at the end of the month, except in the southern regions.
Forecasts show that in the first ten days of August, a subtropical ridge is expected to develop from North Africa towards Europe, leading to a new wave of heat. The heat wave is expected to peak on 5-15 August, with maximum temperatures of 40°C and above. Hazardous convective phenomena such as heavy rains, squalls and hail are also expected. The heat will gradually move eastwards. In the second half of the month, temperatures are expected to drop and rains are expected.
However, the amount of precipitation will be low due to high atmospheric pressure. This will have a negative impact on the vegetation in many regions of Ukraine and lead to lower river levels, especially on the Left Bank. The fire risk will also remain high. The air temperature in August will be the hottest in the first ten-day period in the western and southern regions, then it will spread to most of the country, and in the third ten-day period the temperature will drop. The average temperature in August is expected to be 2-2.5°C above normal.
Given the weather patterns, conditions will be unfavourable in most regions of Ukraine, especially in the south-eastern part of the country.
