The French prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the voice assistant Siri from the tech giant Apple. The reason was a complaint filed by an independent researcher accusing the company of illegal data collection. This was reported by Reuters, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
According to the Paris prosecutor’s office, the investigation has been assigned to a police unit specializing in cybercrime. Details of the case have not yet been disclosed.
The complaint was initiated by researcher Thomas Le Bonic. He told Reuters that the complaint was filed on behalf of the French human rights organization, the League of Human Rights.
LDH accused Apple of collecting, recording, and analyzing users’ conversations with Siri without their consent. At the time of publication of the news, the organization did not provide more detailed comments on this topic.
“The launch of a criminal investigation sends a clear message: fundamental rights matter, and there are organizations and individuals determined to defend them,” Le Bonic said.
In response, Apple told Reuters that it tightened privacy for Siri in 2019 and again this year. The company cited a January post on its website that stated that Siri conversations are never shared with marketers or sold to advertisers
