There will be no forced mobilization of women in Ukraine: Rada adopts law
9 January 22:25
Today, on January 9, the Verkhovna Rada voted in favor of draft law No. 12076 on basic military training. The law guarantees that participation in the training will be voluntary for women, and they will not be mobilized. This was announced by MP Oleksiy Honcharenko, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
“298 people’s deputies voted in favor.
“My amendment to the bill protected women from mobilization. Basic military training for women will be voluntary only, and after that, they will be registered in the military register only on a voluntary basis,” Honcharenko wrote.
He also noted that this bill allows young men who are now turning 18 abroad to register without coming to Ukraine. He reiterated that there will be no mobilization of women in Ukraine.
Earlier, there were concerns in society about the possibility of mandatory military registration of women, which sparked lively discussions.
When asked by journalists about possible support for a law on mandatory mobilization of women and men under the age of 27, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy replied: “No, not for women. As for 25 years old, if all the necessary arguments are provided, and today I see that it is necessary, I will agree.”
It is worth noting that the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine supported the draft law No. 12076 on amendments to the Law of Ukraine “On Military Duty and Military Service,” which significantly simplifies the procedure for registering conscripts and modernizes the system of registration in general.
As explained by the Ministry of Defense, from now on, 17-year-old male citizens will be able to register for military service in two ways: through the Conscript’s Electronic Office using electronic identification or by visiting a territorial recruitment and social support center in person.
Another important change is the abolition of the commission for military registration of conscripts and the initial medical examination. Instead, medical examinations will become mandatory immediately before being sent for basic military service and before the start of practical training in basic general military training, which will be introduced in higher education institutions in 2025.
The draft law also defines valid reasons for the impossibility of registration, including
- illness of the conscript
- natural disasters;
- residence in the temporarily occupied territory or in a war zone;
- other circumstances that make electronic identification or personal arrival at the MCC and JV impossible.
