Putin and Trump secretly discuss resumption of Nord Stream projects, according to media reports

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump are discussing the possible resumption of the Nord Stream gas pipelines, but under Washington’s control.

This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Berliner Zeitung.

The US has plans for Nord Stream

The negotiations are taking place unofficially and without the participation of the EU.

According to the publication, the issue of the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines, which were damaged by explosions in September 2022, has allegedly become part of broader geopolitical consultations between Moscow and Washington.

Officially, the project is considered effectively closed, and the pipelines remain unusable. At the same time, according to sources close to the Russian side, the option of resuming gas supplies to Europe is being discussed, but under US control.

According to the Berliner Zeitung, this involves the possible participation of American investors in the restoration or acquisition of part of the infrastructure. Among the potentially interested parties is investor Stephen Lynch, who previously worked with Russian energy assets.

It is noted that Germany’s official position remains unchanged—Berlin supports the EU’s sanctions policy against Russia and is not considering resuming gas pipeline operations. At the same time, information about possible negotiations without the participation of the European Union has sparked debate about the risks to Europe’s energy security.

There is currently no official confirmation from Moscow or Washington.

Background to Nord Stream

The Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline transported gas from Russia to Germany, which distributed it to other European countries. Nord Stream 2, which was built to supply gas to Europe but bypass Ukraine, never became operational due to Russia’s full-scale invasion. In September 2022, both gas pipelines were blown up at the bottom of the Baltic Sea.

At that time, the pipelines were considered the main route for Russian gas supplies to Europe.

Ukrainians are suspected of sabotaging the gas pipelines. In November 2025, German law enforcement arrested Ukrainian Serhiy Kuznetsov. He was extradited from Italy on charges of direct involvement in the explosions and is currently in a detention center in Germany.

The second suspect is Ukrainian Vladimir Zhuravlev. Although Germany requested his extradition, a Polish court refused to extradite him in October 2025 and released him.

Recently, the media reported that a group of Ukrainians linked to the gas pipeline explosions discussed their sabotage plan with CIA intelligence officers.
