Putin refuses to compromise and expects concessions from Kyiv: what is known about the new stage of negotiations

2 December 07:44

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin repeats his ultimatum demands and shows no willingness to compromise. Meanwhile, the United States is stepping up its diplomatic efforts to push forward a negotiated peace plan to end the war in Ukraine. However, the Kremlin seems to be counting on a delay and hopes that Kyiv will one day be forced to agree to Russian terms. This is reported by ABC News, "Komersant Ukrainian" informs

The Russian dictator reiterates his demands for the final withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the territories that Russia considers its own, and also calls negotiations with Volodymyr Zelenskyy pointless.

december 2 is a key date for the Trump Administration

According to ABC News, December 2 was an important milestone in the attempts of US President Donald Trump’s team to formulate a proposal to resolve the war. Special envoy Steve Vitkoff arrived in Russia to present a preliminary version of a joint peace plan to Vladimir Putin.

However, the American side does not expect the Kremlin to immediately agree to any terms. On the contrary, Putin’s public statements indicate that he will maintain the most rigid position possible.

What are the Kremlin’s demands?

Putin is repeating the same points that have been voiced many times before:

  • withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the territories that Russia calls “its own”
  • kyiv’s renunciation of any claims to these regions;
  • unwillingness to negotiate with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The Kremlin believes that the military situation is developing in its favor, so there is enough time to “push” Ukraine to accept their terms.

How Ukraine and the United States are reacting

Ukrainian and American negotiators held a meeting in Florida that was described as productive. Although details of the discussions were not disclosed, both sides noted that the “peace plan” had become clearer and more structured.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that three key blocks cause the most discussion:

  1. territorial issues;
  2. financing of Ukraine’s recovery after the war;
  3. security guarantees that should prevent the recurrence of aggression.

Ukraine insists that no negotiations can take place at the expense of its statehood and territorial integrity.

Security guarantees: the final stage

The countries of the “coalition of the willing” have finalized a package of security guarantees for Ukraine.

The document with the United States is expected to be adopted in the near future.

It will become the basis for long-term support and military and political cooperation between Kyiv and Washington.
