What is known about the creation of the Unmanned Systems Forces in Ukraine

on 6 February 2024, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued a separate decree instructing the Cabinet of Ministers, together with the General Staff, to create the Unmanned Systems Forces within the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Draft Law No. 11507 provides for amendments to the Law on the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The draft law regulates the legal framework for the creation of the Unmanned Systems Forces as a separate branch of the armed forces, approves staff positions for working with drones, training, systematising experience and scaling up production.

“The implementation of the draft law will increase the capabilities of the defence forces, in particular the Armed Forces of Ukraine, by providing for the Unmanned Systems Forces in their structure,” the explanatory note says.

In late August, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the draft amendments.

It should be noted that the Unmanned Systems Forces (USF) already have their own commander. It is Colonel Vadym Sukharevskyi. In an interview with ArmyInform he spoke about the main tasks of the UAF.

“From the first day of the creation of the Unmanned Systems Forces, we have always said that our main idea is to save the life of a soldier. This means pushing the enemy back by any means necessary. That is why robotics are being carried out, and large-scale, systematic, professional use of various types of unmanned systems on the battlefield is underway. In fact, this is the future of our Armed Forces,” the military said.

Colonel Sukharevskyi is convinced that drones will soon become the “currency of our state” and “Ukraine’s business card”.

“Drones are our business card. This is the best contribution for our economy after the war to move from the raw materials market to the technological and industrial market,” he added.
