Reuters: NATO unlikely to heed Ukraine’s call for membership

There is no sign of the necessary consensus among NATO’s 32 members to decide whether to invite Ukraine to join the alliance at today’s meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels. This is according to Reuters, citing diplomats who spoke on condition of anonymity
As noted, this destroys official Kyiv’s hopes for a political impetus at a time when Ukraine is fighting on the battlefield and waiting for Donald Trump to return to the White House.
“It will take weeks and months to reach a consensus… I don’t think it will happen now, I would be very surprised,” a senior NATO diplomat said on Monday.
He said that the meeting in Brussels will be devoted to strengthening support for Ukraine so that it is in the strongest possible position next year ahead of possible negotiations.
“The best way to do that is to dramatically increase funding, step up ammunition supplies, and increase mobilization,” the senior U.S. official said on condition of anonymity.
On whom do positive decisions for Ukraine depend?
The United States is the dominant power in NATO, and it is the American position that will determine what decisions are made. The Biden administration cannot help but realize that any serious step toward Ukraine should ideally be supported by the new government to ensure long-term impact.
Reuters recalls that in recent weeks, Ukraine has been one of the topics of discussion between US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and his successor Mike Waltz, but the level of coherence between the outgoing and incoming administrations remains unclear.
Ukraine’s position becomes more categorical
In an interview with Sky News on Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested that the transfer of the territory controlled by the Ukrainian government “under the NATO umbrella” would stop the “hot phase” of the conflict.
