U.S. President Donald Trump is ready to sign a Republican-drafted bill to impose sanctions on Russia if it passes Congress, provided he retains final authority to take such measures, a senior White House official told Reuters, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
Trump told reporters the other day that he did not object to Senator Lindsey Graham and Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick’s drafting of a bill to impose sanctions on any country that trades with Russia, and suggested that Iran be included in the text.
“It has always been important to the White House and the president that the sanctions package include an exception that would give the president the right to make final decisions on sanctions,” said a Trump administration official. – “So if this is included, I think the president will agree to sign the bill.
The source said the White House is not giving up trying to organize talks with Russia to end the war in Ukraine. “Work is underway, that’s for sure. It’s just not in the headlines because there is a lot going on.”
As a reminder, the United States is working on a new bill supported by both major parties that aims to significantly increase economic pressure on the Russian Federation. This initiative has already been approved by President Donald Trump. This was announced by US Senator Lindsey Graham.
It is noted that the key feature of the document is to expand the president’s ability to impose so-called secondary sanctions.
