The activation of the former Prime Minister of Great Britain Boris Johnson around the Ukrainian issue, his meeting with Trump and voicing scenarios for future peace caused a significant resonance in Ukrainian society. And for many, Johnson turned from a great friend of Ukraine into an enemy.
It will be recalled that after the meeting with Trump, Boris Johnson wrote a column in the Daily Mail, in which he described a possible scenario that Trump might like. Schematically, it looks approximately from the following points:
- Without delay, Trump gives Ukraine enough weapons to be able to push back the Russians;
- against this background, all parties are invited to peace talks;
- peace is established along the demarcation line at the beginning of 2022;
- the free part of Ukraine is an absolutely sovereign state that can join the EU and NATO;
- experienced Ukrainian servicemen can easily replace the American contingents in Europe, which Trump wants to withdraw from there;
- Putin “sells” his subjects the victory in the SVO and the denazification of Ukraine;
- the possible introduction of some special mechanism for the protection of Russian-speaking individuals in Ukraine.
What is behind this activity and what should be expected from it, "Komersant Ukrainian" asked political scientist Igor Reiterovych. The expert believes that Boris Johnson laid out his vision of what could happen in Ukraine and “outlined” one of the scenarios that can be applied in practice. According to him, this statement may indicate that
“after the meeting with Trump, Johnson was not sure that he had a final understanding of how to end the Russian-Ukrainian war.”
Reiterovich emphasized that the scenario proposed by Johnson is still quite conditional and not too detailed. However, in his opinion, this is “a representation of one of those positions that today really exists in certain circles in the West.” Reiterovich explains:
“These circles, on the one hand, support Ukraine, on the other hand, they believe that the war cannot end on the terms put forward by Ukraine.”
The political scientist believes that such scenarios appear to probe the soil, and there will be more and more of them.
“…look at the reaction, see how Ukraine will perceive it and how acceptable these scenarios will be for Trump. Now there will be a kind of competition with the appearance of various scenarios, so that one of them can be sold to Trump as well as possible, and he could apply it in practice.”
“Peace Formula”
On October 11, 2022, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced to the leaders of the (G7) countries a “peace formula” to overcome the Russian threat. It includes 10 points:
- Radiation and nuclear safety.
- Food security.
- Energy security.
- Release of all prisoners and deportees.
- Implementation of the UN Charter, restoration of the territorial integrity of Ukraine and the world order.
- Withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine and cessation of hostilities.
- Restoring justice.
- Anti-ecocide.
- Avoiding escalation.
- Fixing the end of the war.
The UN General Assembly approved a resolution with a Ukrainian peace formula in 2023, on the eve of the first anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion. 7 countries voted against it: Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Syria, Eritrea, Mali and Nicaragua. Among those who “abstained” were China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, and Armenia. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia will not conduct negotiations based on Zelensky’s “peace formula”.
