russia launched more than 500 drones and a dozen missiles at Ukraine: how the air defense reacted

On the night of July 4, Russia launched its most powerful air attack on Ukrainian territory since the beginning of its full-scale invasion. The main target of the attack was the capital city of Kyiv. The enemy used more than 550 air strikes, most of which were Shahed attack drones. This was reported by the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, a total of 550 air attack weapons were recorded, including Shahed drones, cruise and ballistic missiles, and the X-47M2 Kinzhal airborne ballistic missile.
Types and number of weapons used:
- 539 unmanned aerial vehicles (Shahed and imitator drones),
- 1 Kinzhal missile,
- 6 Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles,
- 4 Iskander-K cruise missiles.
The launches were carried out from the territory of Russia: Kursk, Bryansk, Voronezh, and Lipetsk regions, as well as from the districts of Shatalovo, Orel, Millerovo, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk.
The work of Ukrainian air defense
The attack was repelled by:
- air defense forces,
- aviation,
- mobile fire groups,
- electronic warfare (EW) units,
- unmanned aerial systems.
As of 08:00, 478 air targets were neutralized, including:
- 270 were destroyed by firepower,
- 208 were suppressed or disabled by electronic warfare.
In particular, the following were shot down:
- 268 Shahed UAVs,
- 2 Iskander-K cruise missiles.
Consequences of the attack
It was recorded:
- 72 air targets hit in 8 regions (9 missiles and 63 drones),
- falling debris in 33 locations.
Information about the damage to infrastructure and casualties is being clarified. Rescuers, police and utilities are working on the ground.
