russian Federation attacks Naftogaz facilities again: destruction recorded

22 July 19:56

On the night of July 22, Russia once again struck a massive blow to the gas production infrastructure of the Naftogaz Group. This was announced by the company’s Chairman of the Board Sergiy Koretsky, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

“Dozens of drones at Naftogaz Group facilities. There is destruction. This is another massive attack on gas production infrastructure. Such attacks occur regularly,” he wrote on Facebook.

According to him, specialists are already working on the ground to eliminate the consequences of the shelling. Koretsky emphasized that the attacks have no military purpose and are aimed at undermining the country’s energy security ahead of the heating season.

“These are acts of terrorism by which the enemy seeks to intimidate Ukrainians and break our will. Their goal is to weaken Ukraine, disrupt preparations for the winter and create problems with gas supply during the cold season,” he added.

Since the beginning of 2024, Russia has carried out more than ten massive attacks on Ukraine’s gas infrastructure, damaging up to 40% of facilities.

Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Russia has launched at least 17 combined attacks (missiles and drones) on the gas production infrastructure of the Naftogaz Group.

Heavy shelling was observed in February and March 2025 in Poltava region, where Ukraine’s key production facilities are concentrated.

Consequences for infrastructure

  • The strikes damaged gas production facilities without causing any human casualties.
  • The company is working to restore the damage, assess the damage and stabilize supplies.
  • At times, temporary emergency shutdowns had to be introduced to supply gas to more than 9 settlements.
  • In February, the company was forced to increase imports: last year, Ukraine imported about 512 million cubic meters of gas, three times more than a month earlier.

Analysis and reaction

  • Roman Chumak, acting CEO of Naftogaz, said that such attacks are aimed at undermining Ukraine’s energy stability.
  • The company emphasized that the situation is under control and operations are being closely monitored: gas reserves are being stored and supplies to consumers are being ensured.

Restoration and support

  • In December 2024-June 2025, the EBRD provided a €36.4 million loan to modernize Naftogaz to purchase new drilling rigs to increase the depth of wells.
  • The restoration of the energy infrastructure is ongoing, and the company is importing LNG from Europe to compensate for the lost volume and prepare for the heating season.
