Roshen stops production of chocolate in Hungary: the reason is known

Roshen has closed its second confectionery factory in Budapest (Hungary), Bonbonetti. This was announced by Roshen CEO Oleksandr Holovashchuk in an interview with Forbes Ukraine, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

According to him, this happened due to unprofitability and the inability to expand production.

“The factory has not been producing products since April 2023. Some of the Bonbonetti equipment was transported to the Vinnytsia Confectionery Factory, and some was utilized,” Golovashchuk said.

What is known about the Roshen factory in Hungary

Bonbonetti Choco Kft. is a confectionery factory located in the Hungarian city of Budapest, a division of the Ukrainian corporation Roshen.

The factory was founded in 1868 by German confectioners. In 1934, the company launched the production of so-called “porcelain jewelry” made of a unique type of chocolate. In addition to the main cities of Hungary, there are branded stores in Paris and Vienna, and the packaging for the sweets is designed by famous artists of the time.

In 1941, the factory became the largest in Hungary and one of the most modernized in Europe. In 1960, the factory was renamed the Budapest Chocolate Factory. in 1992, the company was privatized by the German company Stollwerk.

In 2004, as a result of the takeover of Stollwerk by the investment company Mabelsoft, the most powerful confectionery corporation in Hungary, Bonbonetti Group, was formed. And in 2012, Bonbonetti Group signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Ukrainian corporation Roshen, which bought a controlling stake in the Bonbonetti Choco Kft.

Bonbonetti Choco Kft was one of the leading confectionery manufacturers and one of the largest chocolate factories in Hungary. The most famous brand of the factory is Tibi. This brand produces dark and milk chocolate with a variety of cream and jelly fillings, including more than a dozen traditional flavors and new combinations, as well as four types of chocolate in boxes.

For the winter holidays, Bonbonetti has always prepared New Year’s sets called Bonbonetti Christmas.

Roshen Confectionery Corporation

Roshen Confectionery Corporation is one of the largest confectionery producers in Ukraine and Eastern Europe, and one of the thirty largest confectionery producers in the world. The company is headquartered in Kyiv.

Roshen produces about 320 types of confectionery products, including candies, chocolate, caramel, biscuits, wafers, marmalade and cakes. Among the corporation’s wide range of products, the most famous and popular are Kyivsky cake, Kyiv Evening, Red Poppy, Crazy Bee, Korivka, Shokolapki, and other sweets.

Currently, Roshen includes Ukrainian factories (Kyiv, Kremenchuk, Boryspil and two production sites in Vinnytsia), Klaipeda Confectionery Factory in Lithuania, Bonbonetti Choco Kft in Hungary, and Vinnytsia Dairy Plant.

Roshen is the largest producer of sweets in Ukraine. In 2021, Forbes estimated the corporation’s value at $1.1 billion.

The ultimate beneficiary of the corporation is Oleksiy Poroshenko, the son of the fifth Petro Poroshenko.
