on August 28, Russia attacked the Ukrainian Navy ship Simferopol. As a result of the attack, one Ukrainian serviceman was killed, several crew members were injured, and several more sailors are being searched for.

The fact of the attack was confirmed by Navy spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk in a comment to LIGA.net, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

“We confirm the fact of the attack on the ship. The consequences of the attack are currently being eliminated. Most of the crew is safe,” Pletenchuk said.

According to the occupying Russian Defense Ministry, the attack was carried out by an unmanned boat at the mouth of the Danube. The Russians claimed that the Ukrainian ship allegedly sank, but there is no official confirmation of this information.

For reference

“Simferopol is a medium-sized reconnaissance ship of the Laguna project. It was built at Kyiv’s Kuznya na Rybalskomu shipyard and launched in April 2019. The vessel is designed for electronic intelligence and to enhance the capabilities of the Ukrainian Navy.

russia has been trying to develop unmanned maritime boats since at least 2023. Then one of them was used for the first time against a railway bridge in Odesa. In 2025, the Russians tested new boats of the Murena-300 type, but the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine stated that their attempts were mostly unsuccessful.

In July of this year, Russia practiced the use of maritime drones in the July Storm exercise, effectively copying Ukraine’s tactics in the Black Sea. The Kremlin stated that it “takes into account the experience of combat operations,” although the Ukrainian army has repeatedly proved its superiority in using naval drones to defeat the enemy fleet.
