The fire that destroyed one of Warsaw’s largest shopping centers, Marywilska 44, in May 2024 was no accident. As confirmed by Polish law enforcement and government officials, the arson was a deliberate act of sabotage organized by Russian special services, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports, citing a post by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on the social network X.
This is yet another proof that Russia is waging a hybrid war not only against Ukraine, but also against countries that support it in its fight against the aggressor.
According to Tusk, the customer of the arson attack is located in Russia, the perpetrators have been partially identified, and some of them have already been detained.
“We now know for sure that a large fire in the Marywilska shopping center in Warsaw was caused by an arson attack ordered by Russian special services. Some of the perpetrators have already been detained, all the others have been identified and are wanted. We will get you all,” Tusk wrote.
The Ministries of Justice and Interior of Poland reported that they have clear evidence: preparation, video recording of the crime and organization of the actions of the criminal group from abroad. The investigation materials include not only Polish citizens, but also people who may be connected to Russian agent networks in the EU.
This incident is not an isolated one. Only a week before the Warsaw tragedy, an IKEA store in Vilnius was set on fire in Lithuania, and Lithuanian prosecutors also linked this case to the activities of the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence service. Polish investigators do not rule out that both arsons are part of a coordinated sabotage campaign against the infrastructure and economy of Ukraine’s allies.
The fire at Marywilska 44 destroyed more than 1,400 shops, leaving thousands of entrepreneurs, including a large share of the Vietnamese diaspora, out of work. For many of them, this was their only means of livelihood.
Official Warsaw emphasizes that Russia seeks to destabilize the internal security of EU countries by undermining trust in state institutions and sowing panic. Poland promises to bring all those involved to justice and to strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure from foreign interference. The investigation is ongoing, and the authorities are working closely with European partners to prevent similar attacks in the future.
