Russia demands at the UN to stop arms supplies and mobilization in Ukraine: Kyiv’s reaction

on May 30, at a meeting of the UN Security Council, Russia voiced new demands to the West and Ukraine, calling them “conditions for a truce.” Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, publicly called for an immediate cessation of Western arms supplies to Ukraine and a halt to mobilization activities. These statements caused outrage from official Kyiv and calls for the international community to respond, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

According to Nebenzi, Russia proposes to hold Russian-Ukrainian talks on June 2 in Istanbul, during which the parties can allegedly “exchange memoranda” on the parameters of a possible truce. At the same time, he accused President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders of not wanting peace, calling them a “party of war.”

Russian rhetoric: ultimatums instead of diplomacy

In his speech, the Russian representative also confirmed that Russia deliberately strikes at Ukrainian military-industrial facilities, calling them “disguised military targets.”

In addition, Nebenzya threatened Germany and the United Kingdom for lifting restrictions on the use of long-range weapons against targets in Russia and for allegedly participating in the planning of attacks on the Kerch Bridge.

He also said that “there will be no repetition of Minsk,” insisting that the West should stop supporting Ukraine with weapons, and that Ukraine itself should stop mobilizing as a condition for a temporary ceasefire. Nebenzia also traditionally accused the West of “Russophobia” but at the same time declared his readiness to “talk about coexistence.”

Ukraine’s reaction: Moscow has turned diplomacy into a threat

Official Kyiv reacted sharply to Russia’s statement. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine noted that Moscow is not interested in real peace, and its diplomatic actions are a continuation of aggression in a political format.

“In the UN Security Council, Russia declares that it is ready to continue and intensify military actions as long as necessary,” the Foreign Ministry said in an official statement.

Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga called Nebenzi’s statement a direct slap in the face to all those seeking a peaceful resolution to the war, including the US, EU, China, Brazil and other countries.

“This is Russia’s slap in the face to all those who stand for peace. Not only to Ukraine, but also to the United States, European countries, China, Brazil and others,” he said.

Ukraine demands a response to Russia’s bold statements that jeopardize the peace process.

“We insist that pressure on Moscow should be increased right now. They do not understand normal attitudes or diplomatic language; it is time to speak to them in the language of sanctions and increased support for Ukraine,” he added.
