On 4 September, the family of Yaroslav Bazylevych, a descendant of Ivan Franko, was killed in a missile attack by the Russian Armed Forces on Lviv. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the a statement by Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi on Telegram.

He posted a group photo of the Bazylevich family.


“After today’s attack, only the man in this photo survived. His wife Yevhenia and their three daughters – Yaryna, Daryna and Emilia – were killed in their own home. Yaryna Bazylevych is standing behind. The girl was 21 years old. She worked in our Lviv – European Youth Capital 2025 office. “In the centre of Europe, Russia is killing Ukrainians with their families. the Russians are killing our children, our future. I don’t know what words to use to support Yaroslav’s father,” Sadovyi wrote.

What is known about the Bazylevych family

Yaryna Bazylevych, 21 years old

The girl was a programme manager at the Lviv – European Youth Capital 2025 office.

“A kind and bright person, she has been working with us since the creation of the MoloDvizhCentre, and later the entire TWORI! We will not forget and we will not forgive,” said Yaryna’s colleagues from the youth organisation Network of Works.

In 2023, Yaryna studied at Lviv Polytechnic, majoring in Computer Science. She also completed a graphic design course.

Daryna Bazylevych, 18 years old

Daryna was a second-year student in the Cultural Studies programme at UCU’s Faculty of Humanities, an active student, a mentor at UCU’s Volunteer Lab, and a Plast member. She studied at the theatre studio, studying various aspects of acting.

Daria received a scholarship at UCU. In her motivation letter for the scholarship, she wrote that she chose to study cultural studies,

“…because I am a very creative person, I am interested in the culture and history of my country and in the future I want to develop the culture of Ukraine and tell the whole world about it. This passion arose in me thanks to my family, who always shared with me stories about the trials our ancestors went through as a result of the world wars, the Holodomor and the Soviet Union. In addition to me, my parents are raising two more sisters, and we have an incredibly close-knit and harmonious family. My family is an inexhaustible source of support that cannot be compared to any other. They are the biggest pillar in my life that helps me overcome any obstacles.”

Emilia Bazylevich, 7 years old

on 2 September 2024, Emilia entered the 2nd grade at Svitanok Primary School in Lviv.

Yevheniia Bazylevych, 43 years old

The woman worked with the Ukrainian Perfumers’ Guild. In the early 21st century, she studied at the Lviv Institute of Management.

In February 2024, she celebrated 26 years of marriage with her husband Yaroslav.


“You are my foundation, my base, to which I can and do return all the time. You are my Partner in crime. You are interesting, beautiful, free, free and wonderful. I can tell You everything, well, actually everything, You know! We already have a lot of experience behind us and I hope we will have even more. I like to hang out with You with old and new friends, to meet interesting people – you attract them. Thank you for putting up with me, I want to be 25 again and with the experience we have, and then we’ll see,” Yaroslav Bazylevych wrote to his wife on social media.

How Yaroslav Bazylevych is related to Ivan Franko

The father of the Bazylevych family, Yaroslav, has family ties to the family of the writer Ivan Franko. He is the grandson of Zorian Bazylevych, a relative of Ivan Franko’s daughter-in-law through his son Petro, Olha Franko. Olha Franko’s mother was a member of the Bazylewicz family.

“My sincere condolences to the Bazylewicz, Bilewicz, and Franko families… I am crying with you… Today, the family of the great Franko has suffered a direct blow to the heart from the terrible “dark kingdom” that Russia is bringing,” wrote French scholar Natalia Tikholoz.

Missile attack on Lviv on 4 September: what is known

On the morning of 5 September, the Russian Armed Forces attacked Lviv with various types of long-range missiles. As a result, residential buildings and other structures were destroyed on:

  • mihnovski brothers street;
  • konovalets Street;
  • melnyk Street;
  • near the railway station.

The mayor of the city, Andriy Sadovyi, said that as of the morning of 4 September, more than 50 buildings had been damaged in Lviv. Residents of 6 of them will be relocated.

Two medical facilities, three schools and the Centre for Creativity were also damaged.

Air quality in the city has deteriorated as a result of the missile attack. It has a high level of pollution and can negatively affect people’s health. Residents were advised not to open windows.

As of 13:00, search and rescue operations were completed in Lviv.

Russian Armed Forces hit Lviv with missiles: how many people were injured

As of 15:00, 53 people have been reported injured and seven killed.

Thirty-five victims of the shelling were taken to the hospitals of the First Medical Unit of Lviv. 11 patients are in critical condition in Lviv hospitals.

“Right now, critical patients are being saved in 6 operating theatres,” Natalia Matolinets, medical director of the medical association , told reporters.

the doctors sent 8 of the injured to outpatient treatment after they had received all the necessary medical care with a psychotherapist’s advice.

The rocket attack on 4 September in Lviv resulted in deaths:

  • Emilia Bazylevich, 7 years old;
  • Daryna Bazylevych, 18 years old;
  • Yaryna Bazylevych, 21 years old;
  • Bazylevich Yevgeniya, 43 years old;
  • Demidova Irina, 52 years old;
  • Pogoretskiy Oleksandr, 54 years old;
  • Yuriy Arabskiy, 55 years old.

5 September was declared a Day of Mourning in Lviv.
