Russia has attacked energy facilities again: “Ukrenergo introduces emergency blackouts
9 December 09:53
On Tuesday, December 9, Ukraine’s power grid experienced another power shortage due to the effects of Russia’s massive drone strikes. Emergency power outages were introduced in a number of regions, Ukrenergo reported, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
The company emphasized that the previously published schedules of outages are temporarily not valid, as the amount of damage to the power grids requires prompt balancing of the system. Power engineers are working to restore power and return to the planned hourly schedules.
Why emergency blackouts were introduced
As explained by Ukrenergo, additional restrictions are related to the consequences of previous missile and drone attacks that seriously damaged the energy infrastructure.
The main causes of emergency shutdowns
- destruction of equipment at power facilities after a nighttime strike;
- the need to urgently balance the system to avoid a large-scale blackout;
- high accident rate in networks operating in overloaded mode.
The company said that emergency outages will continue until the system stabilizes, after which Ukraine will return to the planned schedule.
Situation in the regions: where the biggest problems are
Ivan Fedorov, head of Zaporizhzhia regional power company, said that Russian troops attacked Dnipropetrovs’k region at night, which resulted in serious damage to power grids.
Consequences of the attack:
- 5200 subscribers in Zaporizhzhya district were left without electricity;
- emergency crews are working at the site of the damage;
- a number of communities may experience long power outages due to the scale of the damage.
Mr. Fedorov emphasized that restoration work is ongoing, but that additional difficulties may arise due to shelling.
Emergency power cuts have been introduced in Poltava, Sumy and Kharkiv regions.
Today, hourly outage schedules and power limitation schedules for industrial consumers and businesses are applied in all regions of Ukraine from 00:00 to 23:59.
The current schedules are posted on the official websites of regional distribution system operators, and changes in power supply can be found on the pages of regional power distribution companies.
What Ukrenergo says
According to the company’s CEO Vitaliy Zaichenko, after the eighth massive Russian attack on the power system, the situation remains difficult but under control.
Key points:
- power engineers work around the clock;
- restoration of damaged facilities will take time;
- it will be difficult to reduce the number of outages in the near future;
- the risks of new emergency outages remain.
“Ukrenergo urged Ukrainians to save electricity, especially in the evening, to reduce the load on the grid.
What it means for consumers
Consequences for households and businesses:
- sudden power outages that are not scheduled are possible;
- increased load on regional grids;
- slower recovery in areas with active hostilities or night attacks;
- return to stable supply only after the balance in the system is equalized.
Consumers are advised to
- follow updates from regional power distribution companies;
- minimize the use of powerful appliances during peak hours;
- charge necessary devices in advance.
