Russian attack leaves 150,000 people without power: power facility damaged in Chernihiv region

25 March 08:21

On the night of March 24–25, Russian troops launched an attack on critical infrastructure facilities in the Chernihiv region. The strike damaged an energy facility in the Chernihiv district, resulting in a widespread power outage. This was reported by the press service of Chernihivoblenergo JSC, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

How many people were left without power

According to official information from energy officials, after the power system facility was hit, approximately 150,000 consumers in Chernihiv and the Chernihiv district were left without power.

The company emphasized:

“The enemy attack damaged an energy facility in the Chernihiv district. Approximately 150,000 customers in Chernihiv and the Chernihiv district are without power.”

The strike caused a sharp power shortage in the grid, making a stable power supply in the region impossible.

When power will be restored

Power utility workers have already mobilized emergency crews to address the aftermath of the attack. However, work to restore power will begin only after the security situation stabilizes.

The company explained:

“Emergency restoration work will begin as soon as the security situation allows.”

What is known about the nighttime attack

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the air raid alert in the Chernihiv region lasted from 4:02 a.m. to 5:43 a.m. During this time, the region was under threat of attacks by strike drones.

Experts also note that Russia’s recent massive attacks demonstrate a shift in strike tactics. According to analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the new strategy allows the aggressor to:

  • attack more regions simultaneously;
  • sustain attacks for longer periods;
  • increase pressure on civilian infrastructure.

Advice for Chernihiv residents

Energy officials have urged residents of the region to:

  • stay calm;
  • charge their phones and power banks;
  • use electricity sparingly once power is restored;
  • to follow official announcements.

Experts emphasize that the situation may change depending on how the security situation develops.

Why is Russia attacking Ukraine’s energy sector?

Since the start of the full-scale war, Russia has been systematically attacking Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The main goal of these strikes is to create an electricity shortage, put pressure on the civilian population, and destabilize the economy.

Despite this, Ukrainian energy workers continue to quickly restore damaged facilities and maintain the stability of the power grid.
