Ukraine has launched an open competition for the 30th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition. Its participants will work at the Akademik Vernadsky station in 2025-2026. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the National Antarctic Science Centre (NASC).
The wintering team of the 30th UAE is planned to consist of approximately 7 scientists and 5 members of the station’s life support team – engineering and technical personnel, a doctor and a cook.
The team of winterers traditionally requires:
scientists in the following areas:
- geology and geophysics;
- physical sciences (meteorology, atmospheric physics);
- life sciences;
life support team:
- doctor
- cook
- system administrator
- system mechanic;
- diesel engineer-electrician.

The competition has no restrictions on gender, age or other characteristics. The main criteria for the selection of expedition participants are education, professional level and experience. The general requirements also include the absence of chronic diseases and health contraindications to work in the extreme conditions of the Antarctic; non-conflict and sociability; and, preferably, knowledge of one of the foreign languages (English and/or Spanish is preferred).

The need for a long stay in a closed team requires candidates to have mental balance, restraint, respect and other traits that help ensure a comfortable climate in the team.

To participate in the competition, you need to send an application and a number of documents to the NASC by 14 August. A sample application, a detailed list of documents and requirements for specialists, as well as information on further stages of the competition can be found in the official announcement on the website:

“Since 1996, and despite all the challenges, Ukraine has continued Antarctic research, making a significant contribution to world science. Let me just remind you that some series of geophysical and meteorological observations at the Akademik Vernadsky station are the longest in the entire Antarctic. And one of the main tasks of our scientists is to continue collecting, processing and transferring this unique data to international and Ukrainian organisations. They are used for various forecasts, modelling, and research around the world. We invite you to join this honourable mission,”
– said Yevhen Dykyi, Director of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
Currently, 14 members of the 29th expedition are working at the Vernadsky Research Station. The team includes 10 newcomers and 4 experienced polar explorers, and four women – a doctor, a biologist, a meteorologist and a geophysicist.
