The US may pay up to $700 billion to buy Greenland. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has already been tasked with preparing a proposal.
This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to NBC News.
Three sources told the TV channel that scientists and former US officials had prepared an estimate of Greenland’s value as part of US President Donald Trump’s desire to buy the island.
This amount exceeds half of the Pentagon’s annual budget and is linked to Trump’s national security priorities.
However, a senior White House official told reporters that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been tasked with preparing a proposal to buy Greenland in the coming weeks, calling the plan a “high priority” for Trump.
Today, January 14, Rubio and US Vice President Jay D. Vance are expected to meet with representatives from Denmark and Greenland who have arrived in Washington to better understand Trump’s intentions and proposals.
“I would be happy to make a deal with them. It’s easier that way. But one way or another, we’re going to get Greenland,” Trump said earlier.
For her part, Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motsfeldt, upon her arrival in Washington, stressed that Greenland does not want to be “owned, controlled, or part of the United States.”
“We choose the Greenland we know today, as part of the Kingdom of Denmark,” she said.
Also, according to NBC News, a scenario is being considered in which the US and Greenland would sign a so-called free association agreement. Such an agreement would provide for US financial assistance in exchange for permission for an American military presence.
Purchase of Greenland
On January 7, White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt said that US President Donald Trump wants to buy Greenland.
According to her, the American leader does not rule out the possibility of a military scenario in the context of his plans to annex the island to the US.
