Ryanair abandons paper tickets: what will change for passengers

11 November 11:36

Irish low-cost airline Ryanair has announced that starting Wednesday, passengers will be able to use only digital boarding passes through the airline’s official app. Paper tickets are finally being withdrawn from circulation. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to dpa.

How the innovation will work

Passengers must download a digital boarding pass to their smartphone or tablet via the Ryanair app.

Without a digital ticket, access to security control and boarding will be blocked.

In the event of a lost phone or low battery, passengers can receive a free ticket at the airport to the security checkpoint. If a problem arises after security, the gate staff will assist the passenger using data from the Ryanair system.

Online check-in is mandatory

The most important step is to check in online before the flight.

Passengers who ignore the online check-in reminder can get a printed ticket at the airport for an additional fee: from €30 in Spain, €40 in Austria to €55 in other EU countries and the UK.

Passengers without a smartphone can receive a paper ticket if they have previously registered on Ryanair’s website.

Features of group travel

The app is not required for all group members. One passenger can show all tickets on his smartphone or send them to other members of the group.

The purpose of switching to digital tickets

The airline said that the move is part of its digital strategy and aims to simplify check-in while reducing its environmental footprint. The initiative could save more than 300 tons of paper waste annually.

The first launch was scheduled for May, but was postponed to November to avoid large crowds of passengers.

Ryanair statistics

The expected number of passengers in November 2025 is about 13 million, down from almost 20 million in May.

At the end of the year, Ryanair forecasts a record 207 million passengers carried.

What you need to know about Ryanair

Ryanair Holdings plc is Europe’s largest low-cost airline headquartered in Dublin, Ireland. Founded in 1984 as a small regional carrier, the company has grown to become one of the pioneers and leaders of the low-cost segment in Europe.

The airline is known for its aggressive marketing strategy and strict baggage policies. The airline’s CEO Michael O’Leary actively promotes a policy of savings and additional fees, which often draws criticism but ensures stable profits.
