Retail in Ukraine: turnover grew by 17%, but real growth is more modest

6 October 18:25

The turnover of Ukrainian retailers in January-June 2025 reached UAH 936.6 billion. This is 17% more than in the same period in 2024. This was reported by the Association of Retailers of Ukraine, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

However, if we take into account inflation at 14.3%, the real growth of the industry is only 2.7%.

Market leaders

  • ATB – revenue of UAH 117.15 billion (20% year-on-year).
  • Silpo – UAH 50.39 billion (16%).
  • Epicenter – UAH 38.98 billion (3%).

Among the fastest growing:

  • Fora – 30% (UAH 20.73 billion).
  • Aurora – 29% (UAH 21.75 billion).
  • Novus – 21% (UAH 16.29 billion).

How the growth is happening

Turnover growth is taking place amid inflationary pressures and the war economy. According to economists, this indicates not so much the expansion of the market as the adaptation of businesses and consumers to new conditions.

Analysts emphasize that retail growth in Ukraine is significantly lower than in the pre-war period. In addition, companies face logistical problems and fluctuations in the purchasing power of the population.

Why it matters

Retail is an indicator of the domestic consumer market. Its dynamics demonstrate how the country’s economy is withstanding the effects of the war.

The performance of Ukrainian retailers is also important in the context of European integration. Danish Ambassador Ole Egberg Mikkelsen emphasized that in order to join the EU, Ukraine must prepare its business to compete in the European domestic market.

Despite the martial law and inflationary pressures, Ukrainian retail is maintaining positive dynamics. However, the industry’s real growth remains modest, and businesses will have to work to improve efficiency as they integrate into the European market.
