EU sanctions against diesel fuel made from Russian oil to take effect in January 2026 – Bloomberg

21 July 21:17

The European Union will impose a new ban on imports of diesel fuel and other petroleum products made from Russian crude oil outside Russia starting January 21, 2026. This was reported by Bloomberg with reference to official EU documents published over the weekend, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

This measure is part of the 18th package of sanctions against Russia, which the EU approved on July 18. It is aimed at blocking one of the main ways of circumventing previous restrictions, when Russian oil was refined in third countries, in particular in India, and sold to the European market.

Analysts note that the EU has granted a six-month transition period to allow markets to adapt.

“The EU has given the diesel market some breathing room by announcing a six-month transition period at the last minute,” commented Florence Schmitt, an analyst at Rabobank.

On Monday, July 21, oil prices on world markets remained almost unchanged. Traders are weighing the possible consequences of sanctions against Russia, while also being concerned that rising production in the Middle East and tariffs could affect demand for fuel.

The new package of sanctions also includes restrictions against the Indian company Nayara Energy, which exports products made from Russian oil.
