The head of the Security Service of Ukraine, Vasyl Malyuk, has submitted his resignation, journalist Stanislav Rechynsky (formerly of the SBU press service) reports. He did not specify the source of his information, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
“Malyuk was pressured to resign, he submitted his resignation,” Rechinsky wrote.
According to his information, two candidates are being considered for Malyuk’s position – Deputy Head of the SBU Oleksandr Poklad and Khmara’s head of the Special Operations Center A, Yevhen Khmara.
All of Malyuk’s supporters emphasize that his removal from office right now looks extremely untimely and ineffective. Moreover, such a decision may negatively affect Ukraine’s position in the war, which is largely strengthened by the work of the Security Service.
Vasyl Malyuk started working in the state security system in 2001. He gradually worked his way up through the regional units, from an operational officer to a deputy head, and later became the head of the unit for fighting corruption and organized crime.
By mid-2010, Malyuk moved to the SSU central office, and since January 2020, he has served as the First Deputy Head of the Main Department for Combating Corruption and Organized Crime. At the same time, since 2014, he has participated in the ATO/JFO, for which he was awarded the Order for Courage and the Order for Courage.
On the eve of a full-scale war, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed Malyuk Deputy Minister of the Interior, and a few weeks later, he was appointed Deputy Head of the SBU. In July 2022, almost six months after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops, Malyuk became the head of the Security Service of Ukraine.
