Fraudsters come up with a new scheme to cheat relatives of prisoners of war

Fraudsters are creating new schemes to extort money from the families of prisoners and missing persons. This was warned by the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

“Attention! Criminals contact through private messages and offer fake extracts allegedly “from the databases” of official bodies. Families are asked to contact the fraudsters, allegedly to add the name of the prisoner to the list for further exchange. In case of a “positive response,” an “official account” is offered, to which the family must pay considerable money for allegedly assisting in the exchange,” the headquarters said.

The scheme is based on emotional pressure and manipulation of trust. Fraudsters add links to the websites of real organizations, although they have nothing to do with them.

“It should be noted that this is another fraudulent scheme designed to take advantage of the difficult emotional state of relatives of prisoners of war. Be vigilant to avoid becoming a victim of scams,” the agency urged.

The press service reminded that only the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War in Ukraine deals with the issue of the release of prisoners of war. Cases of attempted influence by fraudsters should be immediately reported to law enforcement agencies.

It should be noted that the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War was established on March 11, 2022, in accordance with a resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers. The agency was established under the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine.
