Fines for the absence of car insurance in Ukraine are low, but it is important to take out such insurance not only because of the threat of monetary penalties. Drivers without insurance will be forced to cover the cost of damage as a result of an accident from their own pockets, reports "Komersant Ukrainian" "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the lawyer Evgeny Bulimenko.
The lawyer explained that now fines for lack of insurance amount to UAH 425, and if not paid within 15 days, the amount rises to UAH 850.
In addition, owners of cars with transit numbers are not allowed to drive without car insurance. Penalty is also possible for late registration of a new contract, absence of insurance at all and road accident, if the driver is at fault and has no insurance.
The expert recommended to take out insurance not only to avoid fines, but also for full reimbursement of losses in the event of an accident where the driver is found guilty.
It should be noted that Ukraine has changed the rules of motor insurance for owners of motor vehicles. The corresponding law was adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on 21 May 2024. The document proposes to:
– to gradually increase the amounts of insurance sums (maximum insurance payouts) to the amounts established in the European Union countries;
– to introduce rapid implementation of guarantee payments to injured persons for insurers-bankrupts before the enactment of the Law (now it is years, and it is proposed up to 90 days);
– to expand the use of “europrotocol” – processing of an application for insurance compensation in the event of a road traffic accident without the involvement of the police.
