Artificial intelligence may increase the pay gap between men and women

Artificial intelligence (AI), especially generative models, is becoming an important tool in the modern world. However, research shows that its use varies significantly between men and women. This can have serious consequences, including a deepening gender pay gap. This is stated in an article by Bloomberg, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
Economists at the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) found that half of men in the US used generative AI in the past year, while only 37% of women did so. Among them, 28% of men regularly used AI and only 16% of women.
In this context, it is worrisome that generative AI can automate up to 29.5% of working hours in the US by 2030. According to the analysis of the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, the most threatened jobs are those dominated by women – administrative support and office work. This exacerbates gender inequality in career opportunities.
One of the reasons why women avoid AI is a lack of trust in technology, the article says. Women are more likely to fear the negative consequences associated with the use of digital tools, while men see them as an opportunity to increase productivity.
Social conditioning also plays an important role. Women seem to often avoid taking risks for fear of failure. In particular, in the context of generative AI, this may mean fear of being judged for using algorithms to create texts or analyze data.

Some organizations are already working to bridge the gap. For example, Uplevyl, founded by Shubhi Bhonsle-Rao, teaches women digital literacy using AI. Such initiatives help reduce the fear of technology.
Despite the challenges, Deloitte’s report shows an encouraging trend: in 2024, the number of women using generative AI tripled. It is predicted that in some countries, women will even overtake men in terms of the frequency of its use next year.
Experts believe that women adapting to new technologies will be able to avoid the negative consequences of automation. After all, as experts note,
“Artificial intelligence will not replace humans, but it will replace those who do not have the technology.”
To close the gender gap, it is important to ensure women’s access to digital education and technology. This will help them maximize the potential of AI for career growth, experts believe.
