Sweden prepares nuclear shelters in case of World War III

Sweden has launched a large-scale modernization of its civilian shelters: all bunkers across the country must be brought into a state that can protect people even from a nuclear strike. This is reported by BILD, "Komersant Ukrainian" informs
In total, there are 64 thousand shelters in Sweden – more than in any other country in the world. They can accommodate about seven million people. At the same time, the entire population of Sweden is approximately 10.5 million people.
According to the Swedish Civil Protection Authority, 100 million kronor (about 9 million euros) has been allocated for the renovation of shelters.
Since joining NATO, the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency has stepped up inspections of bunkers.
“There are two types of such shelters in the country – ordinary ones built into residential buildings, and so-called “felbunkers” carved into rocks or built of strong concrete. They should protect not only from blast waves and debris, but also from radiation, chemical or biological weapons,” the statement said.
The modernization project fits into the overall strategy of “total defense” adopted in Sweden: in the event of war, every citizen must know his or her role and be ready to act. Repair work has already begun on 25 large bunkers.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said that the country will increase military spending from the current 2.4% to 3.5% of GDP by 2030. He called it “the largest defense buildup since the Cold War.” Earlier, in 2023, Sweden finally abandoned its neutrality and joined NATO.
