Siemens in mourning: Director of the Spanish office killed in a plane crash

Siemens CEO Agustin Escobar was killed when a helicopter crashed into the Hudson River in New York. Among the victims are his three children aged 4 to 11. This was reported by ABC News, "Komersant Ukrainian" informs

Who died in the disaster

According to American media, the victims of the plane crash were:

  • Agustin Escobar, head of the Spanish division of Siemens
  • His wife – Merce Campruby Montal
  • The couple’s three children – aged 4, 5 and 11
  • 36-year-old helicopterpilot.

The family arrived in New York from Barcelona and decided to take a sightseeing flight over the city. It was one of the planned tourist routes.

Siemens representatives expressed their deepest condolences to Agustin Escobar’s family.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague and friend Agustín Escobar and his beloved family. Agustín was the CEO of Siemens Mobility’s Rail Infrastructure Division. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Agustín’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time. We will miss him and his family very much,” Siemens said in a statement.

How the accident happened

The incident occurred on April 10 at 15:17 local time, just 15 minutes after takeoff from the Wall Street heliport. After flying over the George Washington Bridge, the helicopter turned south and suddenly crashed into the water.

According to local services, this was the sixth flight of this helicopter in a day. At the time of the tragedy, the water temperature in the river was about 10°C. Rescuers found the vessel upside down in the water.

What is known about the cause of the accident

The exact cause of the helicopter crash is currently under investigation.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have already launched an investigation into the crash.

This is not the first aviation tragedy in New York

In recent years, there have been several accidents of private or tourist helicopters in the city, which makes experts talk about the need to revise safety rules in the field of helicopter transportation, especially for tourists.
