Siyarto hints at energy war with Ukraine

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has said that Ukraine has again attacked an oil pipeline supplying oil to Hungary, which has resulted in the suspension of oil supplies to the country. He wrote about this on Facebook, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

His statement implies that Ukraine allegedly hit a gas pipeline on the territory of Russia. Szijjártó called the incident “another attack on energy security” Hungary, which he characterized as “outrageous and unacceptable.”

According to the Hungarian minister, Russian Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Sorokin said that Russian specialists are trying to restore the transformer substation necessary for the pipeline’s operation as soon as possible, but cannot yet say when supplies will resume.

Szijjártó claims that Brussels and Kyiv have been trying for three and a half years to “drag Hungary into the war in Ukraine” and that Ukrainian attacks “against their energy security” are aimed at this very goal.

“This is not our war, we have nothing to do with it, we want to stay out of it, and as long as we are in charge, we will stay out of it,”

– the minister emphasized.

At the end of his statement, Szijjártó reminded Ukrainian leaders that electricity from Hungary “plays a key role in Ukraine’s energy supply.”

There has been no official response from Ukraine to these accusations.

Hungary vs. Ukraine

Today’s Hungary is a longtime supporter of Russia and an enemy of Ukraine. Taking advantage of the fact that in the European Union, all member states must agree to a decision, Hungary has blocked a number of pro-Ukrainian EU decisions.

For example, Hungary has been delaying the adoption of legislation that would allow Ukraine to receive up to €2 billion from the EU for weapons at the expense of profits from frozen Russian assets.

In the summer of 2024, Ukraine tightened sanctions against Russia’s Lukoil, which halted the transit of oil from the company to Slovakia and Hungary. In response , Hungary accused Ukraine of violating the Association Agreement and threatened legal action.
