The scandal with the estate: Prosecutor General’s Office opens case against Head of Energy Customs

The Prosecutor General’s Office has opened a criminal investigation into the alleged illicit enrichment of Anatoliy Komar, head of the Energy Customs of the State Customs Service. Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko said this in a commentary to Radio Liberty, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
Reportedly, the case was opened under Article 368-5 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which deals with illicit enrichment. The investigation was entrusted to the State Bureau of Investigation in accordance with the established jurisdiction.
The criminal case was registered by the Prosecutor General’s Office on August 2, a day after the publication of a high-profile journalistic investigation about Komar’s new estate.
As a reminder, journalists of the Scheme project found out that the family of Anatoliy Komar, the head of the Energy Customs, which handles excisable energy, had built a mansion in an elite suburb of Kyiv worth UAH 70 million.
In addition, journalists claimed that Komar drives an executive Mercedes S-class, and his daughter is receiving a paid education at King’s College London.
Komar himself explained that the house was allegedly not built for him, and that his daughter’s education was paid for by her godfather.
The situation provoked a reaction from Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, who instructed to check the activities of Anatoliy Komar and take urgent measures. At present, it is known that the official has been removed from office, and an internal audit is being conducted.
