Scandal before the Paralympics: Ukraine’s uniform deemed political

3 March 00:55

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has banned the Ukrainian team from wearing uniforms depicting the internationally recognized territory of Ukraine at the Paralympic Games. This was announced by Valery Sushkevich, president of the National Paralympic Committee of Ukraine, in an interview with Ukrinform, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

Why the uniform was deemed “political”

According to Sushkevych, the parade uniform set contained a map of Ukraine within its generally recognized borders. The International Paralympic Committee called the design too political. They said that Paralympians should not use elements of national identity, such as the words of the anthem or the outlines of borders.

“The International Paralympic Committee said, ‘No, no, no — that won’t work!’ They said the uniform was political. No one will allow us to wear this uniform,” Sushkevich said.

In response to BBC News Ukraine, the IPC explained that, according to the rules regarding uniforms for the Paralympic Games, national anthems, motivational words, public or political messages, and slogans related to national identity are prohibited.

The uniform had to be changed urgently

Following the IPC’s decision, the Ukrainian delegation had to quickly produce a new set of parade uniforms. According to Sushkevych, they were urgently delivered by bus to Italy, where the team is already staying.

The Winter Paralympic Games will take place from March 6 to 15 in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Admission of athletes from Russia and Belarus

The Ukrainian side was particularly outraged by the IPC’s decision to allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to participate in the Paralympics under their national flags for the first time since 2022.

In response, the Ukrainian team announced a boycott of the Paralympics opening ceremony.

What this decision means

The situation surrounding the Ukrainian team’s uniform caused a stir, as the image of Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders is the official position of the state and does not recognize the occupation of part of its territory.

The 2026 Winter Games will begin on March 6, with Ukraine represented by 25 para-athletes and 10 guide athletes.
