The death of mobilized Roman Sopin: what the forensic examination revealed

28 October 18:56

A lawyer for the family of Roman Sopin, a 43-year-old Kyiv resident who died after being mobilized, has received a forensic medical report.
This was reported by journalist Daryna Trunova, who was the first to tell the story of the deceased, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

The document states that the cause of death was hemorrhage , a fracture of the vault and base of the skull, a closed head injury, and blunt force trauma.

Trunova released fragments of the report, but emphasized that she was not making her own conclusions:

“It is possible that the floor was used as a blunt object,” she wrote.

The case is being investigated by the military prosecutor’s office, the State Bureau of Investigation, and the police.

What is known about Roman Sopin’s death

Roman Sopin died in the premises of the distribution center after mobilization.
According to Trunova, the man had been stopped earlier by representatives of the TCC, passed a military medical commission and was recognized as “fit for service.”

Later, his parents received a call from the hospital, informing them that their son had a closed head injury.
After several days in a coma, Sopin died.

According to the police and representatives of the TCC, the man “fell to the floor and hit his head”.
A similar position was expressed by the 71st separate hunting brigade of the Airborne Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, where he was allegedly supposed to be sent.

However, new forensic evidence casts doubt on the official explanation, as it points to an injury caused by a blunt object.

What the family and officials say

Military ombudsman Olga Reshetylova said she was in touch with the family’s lawyer.
According to her, Sopin’s parents have questions not only about the injury itself, but also about the behavior of law enforcement officers, doctors and representatives of the military unit.

“It is not only about what happened to their son, but also about how the state treats the families of mobilized soldiers after tragedies,” Reshetylova said.

The death of Roman Sopin caused a wide public outcry and raised the issue of transparency of mobilization procedures and conditions of detention in the TCC.
