The World Dog Surfing Championships were held in San Francisco.
This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to NPR.
According to the radio station, the competition among animals is held annually 22 kilometers from the city – on the beach in Pacific Beach State Park. They attract thousands of spectators.
“The dogs competed with dogs of the same size for the right to reach the finals. In additional heats, several dogs surfed in tandem or rode alongside humans,” NPR notes.
As specified, the judges evaluate the time during which the dogs stayed on the board (the owners help them get there), how long they kept their balance and whether they performed any tricks (some can flip over while riding). The winners were awarded medals.
According to the article, Iza, a five-year-old French bulldog, won the surfer race among medium-sized dogs for the first time. She became interested in surfing during the pandemic. At first, she learned to keep her balance in the pool under the guidance of her owner, David Fasoli, and then began to master the waves in the ocean.
“I only have one arm, so a non-athletic human combined with a non-athletic dog breed is kind of a phenomenon that challenges all expectations of what we’re capable of,” Fasoli said after the victory.
