Poland takes over the presidency of the Council of the European Union from Hungary. This is reported by DW, "Komersant Ukrainian" informs

From January 1, 2025, representatives of the Polish government will organize and chair ministerial meetings of the European Union for six months. They will also act as mediators in disputes over EU legislative procedures.

It is noted that the Polish government plans to focus its political priorities on defense and security during its presidency of the EU Council.

Polish Minister of European Affairs Adam Szlapka announced the motto for the next six months: “It’s about security, Europe!”

Over the past six months of Hungary’s presidency of the EU Council, its Prime Minister Viktor Orban has repeatedly caused outrage among member states. Among other things, he visited Moscow and Beijing without prior approval, where he claimed to be holding political talks. Many EU countries viewed this as Orban exceeding his authority.

In response to Orban’s trip to Moscow, the European Commission announced a boycott of informal meetings during the Hungarian presidency of the EU Council. In particular, it said that only high-ranking officials, not European commissioners, would participate in informal ministerial meetings led by Hungary.
