Since the beginning of 2025, Ukraine has imported 7,260.38 tons of watermelons.
Currently, the market is dominated by imported watermelons, as the harvest of this berry in Ukraine will begin later due to the cold spring, according to the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
Most of the products come from traditional importers of melons and gourds:
- Turkey – 4,024.63 tons;
- Greece – 2,243.00 tons;
- Azerbaijan – 735.05 tons.
In general, watermelons are also imported to Ukraine from Peru, Brazil, Costa Rica, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Moldova and other countries.
“The watermelon season has not yet started in Ukraine. Due to the war and the reduction of fertile land, domestic production has significantly decreased. This year, the situation was also complicated by the late spring, as weather conditions delayed the ripening of the crop. That is why imported watermelons now dominate store shelves,” explained Volodymyr Kusturov, Deputy Head of the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection.
He added that each batch of imported watermelons undergoes appropriate inspections.
