Trump’s associates unveil his expanded peace plan for Ukraine

Former CIA Director and US Secretary of State in the Trump administration Mike Pompeo, as well as Trump’s presidential campaign adviser David Urban, wrote an article in the Wall Street Journal in which they outlined and clarified the main points of Donald Trump’s peace plan for Ukraine. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian"

Donald Trump, a potential US presidential candidate from the Republican Party, has repeatedly stated his ability to quickly end the war in Ukraine. For example, the media recently reported on the “Trump plan”.

It has been said that he allegedly plans to bring Ukraine and Russia to the negotiating table and force them to make peace, with each side retaining the territory it controls. If Ukraine refuses such a peace, the US will stop all assistance to it. If Russia rejects such a peace, the US arms Ukraine to the teeth so that it can defeat Russia on the battlefield as quickly as possible.

It seems that Trump is continuing to “build up the meat” on this basis, as new updates from his associates show a much more expanded and refined plan. Moreover, it is not as bad for Ukraine as it might seem.

So, the plan as presented by Trump’s associates is based on three key elements:

  • the introduction of truly effective sanctions against Russia, unlike the current ones, which the authors consider insufficient;
  • strengthening NATO, in particular, increasing defence spending by member states to 3% of GDP;
  • providing Ukraine with a full-fledged $500 billion land-list for the purchase of American weapons.

To implement this plan, the authors propose a significant increase in military orders for the US defence industry. They emphasise the importance of demonstrating the US economic superiority over Russia, whose economy is smaller than that of individual US states.

It is also proposed to gradually oust Russia from global energy markets, for which it is necessary to resolve the situation in Gaza as soon as possible and to enlist the support of Saudi Arabia.

The ultimate goal of the plan is to establish peace in Ukraine on American terms. They include:

  • an end to the military conflict;
  • restoration of Ukraine through reparations from the frozen assets of the Central Bank of Russia;
  • non-recognition of the occupied territories as part of Russia;
  • ukraine’s accession to NATO and the EU;
  • creation of a special fund for arming Ukraine in the amount of $100 billion, where the US share will not exceed 20%.

Obviously, even these “sketches” are very rough, since, for example, nothing is said about how to force Russia to peace. However, there is definitely progress compared to the previous version of Trump’s peace plan.

“The formula for peace”

on 11 October 2022, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced to the leaders of the G7 countries a “peace formula” to overcome the Russian threat. It includes 10 points:

  1. Radiation and nuclear safety.
  2. Food security.
  3. Energy security.
  4. Release of all prisoners and deportees.
  5. Implementation of the UN Charter, restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and world order.
  6. Withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine and cessation of hostilities.
  7. Return of justice.
  8. Countering ecocide.
  9. Preventing escalation.
  10. Fixing the end of the war.

The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution with the Ukrainian peace formula in 2023, on the eve of the first anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Seven states voted against it: Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Syria, Eritrea, Mali, and Nicaragua. The abstentions included China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, and Armenia. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Russia would not negotiate on the basis of Zelenskyy’s “peace formula”.
