Washington wants Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to respond to the proposed peace agreement within “a few days.”
This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the Financial Times.
According to the publication, this demand was conveyed to Zelensky by US Special Representative Steve Witkoff and the US leader’s son-in-law Jared Kushner during a telephone conversation on Saturday, December 6. The Americans pushed the Ukrainian leader to make a quick decision.
The FT’s sources said that the US deal stipulates that Ukraine will accept the loss of territory in exchange for unspecified security guarantees from Washington.
An unnamed source said that Trump hoped to have a peace deal “by Christmas”.
According to the unnamed officials, Zelenskiy told Vitkoff and Kushner that he needed time to consult with European allies before responding to Washington’s proposal. Kyiv fears that such a proposal could split Western unity.
One Western official told the FT that Ukraine’s situation is “caught between territorial demands it cannot accept and American demands it cannot reject.”
There is still no agreement on the Donbas issue
As a reminder, the original US peace plan stipulated that Ukraine would have to hand over the entire Donbas to Russia.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, there is still no agreement between Kyiv and Washington on the Donbas issue.
Zelensky also emphasized that Ukraine has no right to give up its territories to Russia. This is prohibited by the Constitution and international law.
At the same time, according to the President of Ukraine, the most sensitive issues are also the fate of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, money, and security guarantees.
